Wilde’s best-known play, from 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest – which sees two male friends, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, creating the perfect fictional excuse to explain their double lives to those closest to them – has been read in light of Wilde’s own double life (wife and children in Chelsea, assignations with young men in Soho). The story is essentially a variation on the Faust tale, with the titular Dorian Gray (a young, handsome man) giving his soul in exchange for the ability to remain young and handsome while the portrait of him ages and decays, especially as Dorian slides further into moral corruption and sin. The novel is a witty blend of Gothic horror with the ideas underpinning Aestheticism, or the ‘art for art’s sake’ movement. But in many ways Wilde’s only novel is the ultimate Victorian moral fable, about the dangers of living a selfish life driven by the pursuit of ‘new sensations’ above all else.

His own writing eventually lead to his legal demise as his published work The Picture of Dorian Gray was used to incriminate his homosexual tendencies. However, Wilde's homosexuality (unlawful at the time) was uncovered by the court. Eventually Wilde was accused of sodomy by Douglas' father, which resulted in Wilde attempting to sue Douglas' father in court. Although his personality made him instantly popular in his social circles, his work as an author did not become widely recognized until the publication of The Happy Prince and Other Tales a collection of children's stories in 1888.Īlthough Wilde did marry and have children, he led a double life as a homosexual and carried on an affair with aristocrat Lord Alfred Douglas. Wilde eventually relocated to America and became well known for his unusual sense of fashion, long hairm and ostentatious personality. Upon leaving the University, Wilde went on to publish his first volume of poetry entitled "Patience" and followed that work with a play entitled "The Duchess of Padua" in 1883. While a student at Oxford, Wilde gained accolades as he received the Newdegate Prize for his poem "Ravenna" describing his feelings about the Italian city of the same name. Born in Dublin in 1854 Wilde left his homeland to study at Oxford University. Oscar Wilde was a well renowned poet and playwright in 19th century England.
